Georgia Regional Habitats Project
created by Pat Costa and Jason Newton for the Crabapple Lane Third Grade Teachers and Students!

Introduction: We have a serious problem! Someone has come into the third grade classrooms at Crabapple Lane Elementary School and confiscated all of the written resources on Georgia! Now Mr. Newton, Mrs. Catlett, Mrs. Witherow, Mrs. Plaisance, and Miss Smallwood no longer have their encyclopedias that were made especially to teach their 3rd grade students all about the regions of Georgia. The teachers are frantic!!! What can we do???

You can save the day!!
You have been given the opportunity to become investigators, researchers and writers. You will be creating an encyclopedia entitled, Kids Teaching Kids: All About the Regions and Habitats of Georgia. If you accept this challenge you will be giving children, for many years to come, an opportunity to know all about the diverse habitats that make up our beautiful state of Georgia.
Task:
Your task is to write an encyclopedia that will show all the regions and habitats in Georgia. This book will be used for the education of future generations! It is your responsibility to make it as accurate as possible using reliable sources of information. This site has been created for that purpose. Remember, you hold not only your future learning, but the future of all third grade Cardinals in your hands! We know you can do it!

Process:
The following information must be provided on all five regions in Georgia. These regions are know as Coastal, Piedmont, Mountain, Atlantic Ocean, Swamp/Marsh.
1) Plant life - You must include four types of plant life that live in each region.
2) Animals - You should include at least 6 different animals. Bonus points will be given if you can find and record at least one of each of the following: mammal, reptile, amphibian, insect, bird, and fish
3) Land - Describe the topography of the specific region. Are there mountains, rivers, lakes or forests in this specific region? Also, be sure to include the climate. Is it a rainy climate or dry? Hot, humid, moderate are all ways to describe a climate. Remember, climate is the weather over long time periods.
4) Fun facts - What fun facts can you find about this region? Is the highest mountain here or the lowest point in our state in this region? Any fun fact can be included, but it must relate to the region you are writing about.
5) Pictures and drawings - You must include pictures or drawings to go along with your information. These must be neat and of high quality. Do your personal best!
Evaluation: Your teacher will provide you with a rubric along with a checklist of information that must be included in your presentation.

Conclusion: Upon completion of your task, you will have a better knowledge of the regions in Georgia. As future teachers, researchers and authors, I hope you will show children for generations to come just what a great and diverse state we live in!
